Frequently asked questions

What does Backbond actually do?

You give it your research: papers, lab notebooks, experiment data, spec sheets, slide decks. It reads all of it and builds a connected map of your science, so you can ask what affects an outcome, why a batch failed, or what to try next, and get an answer grounded in your own results.

How is this different from ChatGPT?

A general chatbot answers from the public internet and cannot see your work. Backbond answers from your team's own files and data, and every answer opens into the specific rules, experiments and papers it came from.

What can we upload?

PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint decks, Excel and CSV data, images of lab notebook pages, and plain notes. Scanned and table-heavy PDFs are handled too.

Does it just summarize papers?

No. It extracts the causal relationships behind them: which ingredients reinforce each other, which cancel out, which can be swapped, and which effects only appear under certain conditions. Those relationships are what it reasons over.

Do you train AI models on our data?

No. Your data is used to answer your own team's questions and nothing else. It is never used to train models, and it never improves anyone else's product.

Where is our data stored?

On Google Cloud infrastructure, encrypted in transit and at rest. Google's platform carries the industry's standard security certifications, and your workspace sits behind access controls on top of it.

Who can see our projects?

Only the people you invite. Projects are private to your team, and any sharing is explicit and revocable.

Can we take our data out?

Yes. You can delete any project, or your whole workspace, at any time. Deletion removes the data and everything derived from it.
